From the London Times. BARON VON HUMBOLDT ON SLAVERYIN THE UNITED STATES AND IN CUBA.

Baron von Humboldt has caused the followingarticle to be inserted in the Spnerche Zeitung. “Under the title of Essai Politique sur l'Isle deCuba, published in paris in 1826, I collected to-gether all that the large edition of my Voyage auxRegions Equinaxiales du Nouceau Continnent con-tained upon the state of agriculture and slavery inthe Antilles. There appeared at the same time anEnglish and a Spanish Translation of this workthe latter entitled Essayo Politico sobre la Isla deCuba, neither of which omitted any of the frankand open remarka which my feelings humanity hadinspired. But there appeara just now, strangelyenough, translated from the Spanish translation,and not from the French original, and publishedby Derby and Jackson, in New York, an octavovolume of 400 pages under the title of The Islandof Cuba, by Alexander Humboldt; with notes anda preliminary essay by J.S. Thrasher. The trans-lator, who has lived a long time on that beautifulisland, has enriched my work by more recent data on the subject of the numerical standing of thepopulation, of the cultivation of the soil, and thestate of trade, and generally sponking, exhibiteda charitable moderation in his discussion of con-flicting opinions. I owe it, however, to a moralfeeling, that is now as lively in me as it was in1826, publicly to complain that in a work whichbears my name the entire serenth chapter of theSpanish translation, with which my essai politique ended, has been arbitrarily omitted. To this veryportion of my work I attach greater importanerthan to any astronomical observations, experimentsof magnetic intensity, or statistical statements.“I have examined with frankness (I here repeatthe words I used thirty years ago) whatever con-corns the organization of human society in the col-onies the unequal distribution of the rights andenjoyments of life, and the impending dangerswhich the wisdom of legislators and the modera-tion of freemen can avert, whatever may be theform of government. “It is the duty of the traveler who has been aneye witness of all that tortures and degrades hu-man nature to cause the complaints of the unfor-tunate to reach those whose duty it is to relievethem. I have repeated in this treatise the fact thatthe ancient legislation of Spain on the subject ofslavery is loss inhuman and atrocious than that ofthe slave Staten on the American Continent.
