Baron Von Humboldt has caused the following articleto be inserted in the Spenersche Zeitung:—
Under the title of “Essai Politique sur l’Isle de Cuba,”published in Paris in 1826, I collected together all thatthe large edition of my “Voyage aux Regions Equi-noxiales du Nouveau Continent” contained upon thestate of agriculture and slavery in the Antilles. Thereappeared at the same time an English and a Spanishtranslation of this work, the latter entitled “EnsayoPolitico sobre la Isle de Cuba,” neither of whichomitted any of the frank and open remarks whichfeelings of humanity had inspired. But there ap-pears just now, strangely enough, translated fromthe Spanish translation, and not from the French origi-nal, and published by Derby & Jackson in New York, anoctavo volume of 400 pages, under the title of “TheIsland of Cuba,” by Alexander Humboldt; with notesand a preliminary essay by J. S. Thrasher. The transla-tor, who has lived a long time on that beautiful island,has enriched my work by more recent data on the sub-ject of the numerical standing of the population, of thecultivation of the soil, and the state of trade, and, gene-rally speaking, exhibited a charitabie moderation inhis discussion of conflicting opinions. I owe it,however, to a moral feeling, that is now as live-ly in me as it was in 1826, publicly to complainthat in a work which bears my name the entire se-venth chapter of the Spanish translation, with which my
essai politique ended, has been arbitrarily omitted. Tothis very portion of my work I attach greater importancethan to any astronomical observations, experiments ofmagnetic intensity or statistical statements. “J’ai exam-iné avec franchise (I here repeat the words which I usedthirty years ago) ce qui concerne l’organisation des so-ciétés humaines dans les colonies, l’inégale répartitiondes droits et des jouissances de la vie, les dangers mena-çants que la sagesse des législateurs et la modérationdes hommes libres penvent c’oigner, quelleque soitla forme des gouvernements. Il appartient auvoyageur qui a vu de près ce qui tourmente et de-grade la nature humaine de faire parvenir les plaintesde l’infortune à ceux qui ont le devoir de les soulager.J’ai rappelé dans cet exposé combien l’ancienne législa-tion Espagnolle de ’esclavage est moins inhumaine etmoins atroce que celle des Etats à esclaves dans l’Amé-rique continentale au nord et au sud de l’équateur.” Asteady advocate as I am for the most unfettered expres-sion of opinion in speech or in writing, I should neverhave thought of complaining if I had been attacked onaccount of my statements; but I do think I am entitled todemand that, in the free States of the continent of Ameri-ca, people should be allowed to read what has been per-mitted to circulate from the first year of its appearance ina Spanish translation.
