Baron von Humboldt has caused the follow-ing article to be inserted in the Berlin Spen-ersche Zeitung:
Under the title of “Essai Politique sur l’Islede
Cuba,” published in Paris in 1826, I collec-ted together
all that the large edition of my“Voyage aux Regions
Equinoxiales du Nou-veau Continent” contained upon the
state ofagriculture and slavery in the Antilles. Thereappeared at the same time an English and aSpanish translation of this work, the latter en-titled
“Ensayo Politico sobre la Isla de Cuba,”neither
of which omitted any of the frank andopen remarks which
feelings of humanity hadinspired. But there appears just now,
strange-ly enough, translated from the Spanish transla-tion, and not from the French original, and pub-lished by Derby and Jackson in New York, anoctavo volume of
400 pages, under the title of“The Island of
Cuba,” by Alexander Hum-boldt; with notes and a
preliminary essay, byJ. S. Thrasher. The translator, who has
liveda long time on that beautiful island, has en-riched my work by more recent data on thesubject of the numerical standing of the popu-lation, of the
cultivation of the soil, and the stateof trade, and, generally
speaking, exhibited acharitable moderation in his discussion of
con-flicting opinions. I owe it however, to a moralfeeling, that is now as lively in me as it was in1826, publicly to complain that in a work whichbears my name the entire seventh chapter of theSpanish
translation, with which my essai politi-queended, has been arbitrarily
omitted. Tothis very portion of my work I attach greaterimportance than to any astronomical observa-tions, experiments of magnetic intensity, orstatistical
statements. “J’ai examiné avecfranchise (I here

tourmenteet dégrade la nature
humaine
de faire parvenirles plaintes de l’infortune à ceux qui
ont ledevoir de les soulager. J’ai rappelé dans cet
ex-posé combien l’ancienne législation

inhumaine et moinsatroce que celle des Etats à esclaves dansl’Amérique continentale au nord et au sud del’equateur.” A steady advocate as I am for themost unfettered expression of opinion in speechor in writing, I should never have thought ofcomplaining if I
had been attacked on accountof statements; but I do think I am
entitled todemand that in the free States of the continentof America people should be allowed to readwhat has been permitted to circulate from thefirst year of
its appearance in a Spanish transla-tion.
