Humboldt on Slavery.

The celebrated Baron Van Humboldt has foundoccasion lately to protest against what purports to bea translation of one of his books, recently publishedin New York. His article, translated for the London Times, from the German Spenersche Zitung, is as fol-lows:— Under the title of Essai Politique sur l’Isle deCuba, published in Paris in 1826, I collected togetherall that the large edition of my Voyage aux RegionsEquinoxiales du Nouveau Continent contained uponthe state of agriculture and slavery in the Antilles:There appeared at the same time an English and aSpanish translation of this work, the latter entitled Ensayo Politico sobre la Isla de Cuba, neither of whichomitted any of the frank and open remarks whichfeelings of humanity had inspired. But there ap-pears just now, strangely enough, translated from theSpanisti translation, and not from the French original,and published by Derby and Jackson, in New York,an octavo volume of 400 pages, under the title of The Island of Cuba, by Alexander Humboldt; withnotes and a preliminary essay by J. S. ThrasherThe translator, who has lived a long time on thatbeautiful island; has enriched my work by more recentdata on the subject of the numerical standing of thepopulation, of the cultivation of the soil, and the stateof trade, and, generally speaking, exhibited a charit-able moderation in his discussion of conflicting opini-ons. I owe it, however, to a moral feeling, that isnow as lively in me as it was in 1826, publicly tocomplain that in a work which boars my name, theentire seventh chapter of the Spanish translation, withwhich my essai politique ended; has been arbitrarilyomitted. To this very portion of my work I attachgreater importance than to any astronomical observa-tions, experiments of magnetie intensity, or statisticalstatoments.—I have examined with frankness (I hererepeat the words I used thirty years ago) whateverconcerns the organization of human sociery in thecolonies, the unequal distribution of the rights andenjoyments of life, and the impending dangers whichthe wisdom of legislators and the moderation of free-men can avert, whatever may be the form of govern-ment. ‘It is the duty of the traveller who has been an eye-witness of all that torments and degrades human na-ture to cause the complaints of the unfortunate toreach those whose duty it is to relieve them. I haverepented in this treatise the fact that the ancient legis-lation of Spain on the subject of slavery is less inhn-man and atrocious than that of the slave States onthe American continent, north or south of theequator. ‘A steadv advocate as I am for the most unfetteredexpression of opinion in speech or in writing, I shouldnever have thought of complaining if I had been at-tacked on account of my statements; but I do thinkI am entitled to demand that in the free States of thecontinent of America, people should be allowed toread what has been permitted to circulate from thefirst year of its appearance in a Spanish translation.
