BARON VON HUMBOLDT ON SLAVERY INTHE UNITED STATES AND IN CUBA. [Correspondence of the London Times.]

Baron von Humboldt has caused the followingarticle to be inserted in the Spenersche Zeitung: ‘Under the title of Essai Politique sur l’ Isle deCuba, published in Paris in 1826, I collected to-gether all that the large edition of my Voyage auxRégions Equinoxiales du Nourcau Continent con-tained upon the state of agriculture and slavery inthe Antilles. There appeared at the same time anEnglish and a Spanish translation of this work, the latter entitled Ensayo Politico sobre la Isla deCuba, neither of which omitted any of the frankand open remarks which feelings of humanity hadinspired. But there appears just now, strangelyenough, translated from the Spanish translation, and not from the French original, and publishedby Derby and Jackson, in New York, an octavovolume of 400 pages, under the title of The Islandof Cuba, by Alexander Humboldt; with notes anda preliminary essay by J. S. Thrasher. The trans-lator, who has lived a long time on that beautifulisland, has enriched my work by more recent data on the subject of the numerical standing of thepopulation, of the cultivation of the soil, and thestate of trade, and, generally speaking, exhibiteda charitable moderation in his discussion of con-flicting opinions. I owe it, however, to a moral |Spaltenumbruch| feeling, that is now as lively in me as it was in1826, publicly to complain that in a work whichbears my name, the entire seventh chapter of theSpanish translation, with which my essai politique ended, has been arbitrarily omitted. To this veryportion of my work I attach greater importancethan to any astronomical observations, experimentsof magnetic intensity, or statistical statements.—‘I have examined with frankness (I here repeatthe words I used thirty years ago) whatever con-cerns the organization of human society in thecolonies, the unequal distribution of the rightsand enjoyments of life, and the impending dangerswhich the wisdom of legislators and the modera-tion of freemen can avert, whatever may be theform of government. ‘It is the duty of the traveller who has been aneye-witness of all that torments and degrades hu-man nature to cause the complaints of the unfor-tunate to reach those whose duty it is to relievethem. I have repeated in this treatise the factthat the ancient legislation of Spain on the subjectof slavery is less inhuman and atrocious than thatof the slave States on the American continent, north or south of the equntor. ‘A steady advocate as I am for the most unfet-tered expression of opinion in speech or in writ-ing. I should never have thought of complainingif I had been attacked on account of my state-ments; hut I do think I am entitled to demandthat in the free States of the continent of America, people should be allowed to read what has beenpermitted to circulate from the first year of itsappearance in a Spanish translation.
