boldt. “Après m’être, dit-il, fatigué en vain pendant un demi-siècle,à démontrer la possibilité d’un canal océanique, et à appeler l’atten-tion sur le golfe de Saint-Michel et de Cupica, comme le point leplus digne d’attention; après avoir si longtemps exprimé, mêmeavec amertume, dans la dernière édition de mes Aspects de la na-ture, le regret que l’on ne se servît pas de tous les moyens que lascience met actuellement à notre disposition, pour obtenir des me-sures exactes, des nivellements précis; je dois plus que tout autreme réjouir de voir enfin renaître les espérances que le succès d’unesi noble entreprise m’avait fait concevoir. Ce succès n’est nullementau-dessus des forces matérielles et intellectuelles des nations civili-sées. Ce grand ouvrage doit être tout d’abord ce qu’il sera toujours.Il ne faut pas commencer par un canal avec écluses, semblable aumagnifique canal Calédonien; il faut créer sur-le-champ un vrai ca-nal océanique; un libre passage d’une mer à l’autre, à travers le-quel la vitesse de la navigation sera modifiée, mais non pas inter-rompue, par la différence de niveau, et la non-coïncidence desmarées.”
