Dr. Cullen’s plan for crossing the Isth-mus of
Panama by a Ship Canal has re-ceived the emphatic testimony in its favour
ofthe veteran Alexander Von Humboldt.—“After having,”
he says, “labored, in vain,during half a century, to prove the
possibilityof an Oceanic Canal, and to point out
theGulf of San Miguel and Cupica as the pointmost worthy of
attention,—after having re-gretted, almost with bitterness, in the
lastedition of my ‘Aspects of Nature,’ that theemployment of
the means which the pres-ent state of our knowledge affords for obtain-ing
precise measurements has been so longdelayed,—I ought more than any one
else,to be satisfied to see, at last, my hopes for sonoble an enterprise
revived. * * Theundertaking is by no means above the intel-lectual and
material power which civilizednations have attained to. The work shouldbe
one to last forever. It should not com-mence with a canal with locks, like the
mag-nificent Caledonian Canal; it must be a real-ly Oceanic Canal, without locks—a free pas-sage from sea to sea,
across which the speedof the navigation will be modified, but
notinterrupted by the difference in hight andnon-coincidence of the
tides.”
