We learn from the London Athenæum that Dr.Cullen’s plan for crossing the Isthmus of Panamaby a ship canal has received the emphatic testi-mony in its favor of Humboldt.
“After having,” he says, “labored in vain dur-ing half a century to prove the possibility of anoceanic canal, and to point out the Gulf of SanMiguel and Cupica as the points most worthy ofattention; after having regretted, almost withbitterness, in the last edition of my ‘Aspects ofNature,’ that the employment of the means whichthe present state of our knowledge affords for ob-taining precise measurements has been so longdelayed, I ought, more than any one else, to besatisfied to see at last my hopes for so noble anenterprise revived. ** The undertaking is byno means above the intellectual and materialpower which civilized nations have attained to.The work should be one to last forever. It shouldnot commence with a canal with locks, like themagnificent Caledonian canal; it must be a really
oceanic canal without locks, a free passage fromsea to sea, across which the speed of the naviga-tion will be modified, but not interrupted, by thedifferences in height and non-coincidence of thetides.”
