The veteran Alexander Von Humboldt has given hissanction to Dr. Cullen's project of a ship
canal for crossingthe Isthmus of Panama. He says:—After having
laboured in vain, during half a century, to prove thepossibility of an Oceanic Canal, and to point out the Gulf of SanMiguel
and Cupica as the points most worthy of attention,—afterhaving
regretted, almost with bitterness, in the last edition of my“Aspects of
Nature,” that the employment of the means whichthe present state of our
knowledge affords for obtaining precisemeasurements has been so long
delayed,—I ought more than anyone else, to be satisfied to see, at last,
my hopes for so noble an enter-prise revived. The undertaking is by no means
above the intellectualand material power which civilized nations have attained
to. Thework should be one to last for ever. It should not commence witha
canal with locks, like the magnificent Caledonian Canal; it mustbe a really Oceanic Canal, without locks,—a free passage from
seato sea, across which the speed of the navigation will be modified,
but not interrupted, by the difference in height and non-coincidenceof the
tides.
