The following letter from the venerable and illus-trious Von Humboldt, announcing in the most feelingmanner the death of his friend and scientific associateLeopold Von Buch, will be read with interest by thoseacquainted with the writings of the great Naturalist.The letter is addressed to Sir Roderick Murchison.—
“Berlin, March 4th, 1853.—That Ishould be destined—I, an old man of eigh-ty-three—to announce to you the saddestnews that I could have to convey! Leo-pold De Buch was taken from us this mor-ning by typhoid fever,—so violent in its at-tack that two days only of danger warnedus. He was at my house so lately as the26th [ult.] despite the snow and the dis-tance between us,—talking geology with themost lively interest. That evening he wentinto society; and on Sunday and Monday,the 27th and 28th, he complained of afeverish attack, which he believed to becaused by a large chilblain swelling, fromwhich he had suffered for years. The in-flammation required the application ofleeches,—but the pain and fever increased.He was speechless for thirty-eight hours ..He died surrounded by his friends, most ofwhom knew nothing of his danger till Wed-nesday evening, the 2d of March. He andI were united by a friendship of sixty-threeyears, a friendship which never knew inter-ruption. I found him in 1791 in Werner’shouse in Freiburg, when I entered theSchool of Mines. We were together inItaly, in Switzerland, in France,—fourmonths in Saltzburg. M. de Buch was notonly one of the great illustrations of hisage, he was a man of noble soul. His mindleft a track of light wherever it passed.Always in contact with nature herself—hecould boast of having extended the limits ofgeological science. I grieve for him pro-foundly,—without him I feel desolate. Iconsulted him as a master; and his affec-tion (like that of Gay Lusac and that ofArago, who were also his friends) sustainedme in my labors. He was four years myjunior,—and nothing forewarned me of thismisfortune. It is not at the distance of afew hours only from such a loss, that I cansay more respecting it. Pity me,—and ac-cept the homage of my profound respectand affectionate devotion.
