Humboldt, at caraccas, in South Amer-ica, has made ſome intereſting obſer-vations on the motion of the barometernear the equator. “I have read,” ſays he,“In the tranſactions of the Bengal Society,that the barometer riſes and falls there re-gularly every 24 hours. Here in ſouth A-merica, its motion is more aſtoniſhing.There are four atmoſpherical tides every24 hours, which depend only on the at-traction of the ſun. The mercury fallsfrom nine o’clock in the morning till fouro’clock in the evening. It riſes from fourtill eleven o’clock; it falls from eleven o’-clock till half paſt four in the morning;it reaſcends from that time till nine o’clock:neither winds, ſtorms, nor earthquakes haveany influence on this motion.”
