Humboldt, at Caraccas, in South America, hasmade some interesting observations on the motionof the barometer near the equator. I have read,says he, in the Transactions of the Bengal So-ciety, that the barometer rises and falls there re-gularly every 24 hours. Here, in South Ame-rica, its motion is more astonishing. There are4 atmospherical tides every 24 hours, which de-pend only on the attraction of the sun. Themercury falls from 9 o’clock in the morning till4 o’clock in the evening. It rises from 4 till11 o’clock; it falls from 11 o’clock till half past 4 inthe morning; it re-ascends from that time till 9o’clock; neither winds, storms, nor earthquakes,have any influence on this motion. This factgoes a great way towards proving the generaltruth of Mr. Howard’s theory.
