Humboldt, at Caraccas, in South-Ame-rica, has made ſome intereſting obſerva-tions on the motion of the barometer nearthe equator. “I have read,” ſays he, “inthe Tranſactions of the Bengal Society,that the barometer riſes and falls there re-gularly every 24 hours. Here, in South-America, its motion is more aſtoniſhing.There are four atmoſpherical tides every24 hours, which depend only on the at-traction of the ſun. The mercury fallsfrom 9 o’clock in the morning till 4 o’clockin the evening. It riſes from 4 till 11o’clock; it falls from 11 o’clock till halfpaſt 4 in the morning; it reaſcends fromthat time till 9 o’clock: neither winds,ſtorms, nor eathquakes, have any influ-ence on this motion.” This fact goes agreat way towards proving the generaltruth of Mr. Howard’s theory, given inthe Philoſophical Magazine, Vol. VII.
