Extract of a letter from M. Von Humboldt to Lalande (London, 1802, Englisch)
|1| Humboldt, at Caraccas, in South America, has made ſome intereſting obſervations on themotion of the barometer near the equator. “Ihave read,” ſays he, “in the tranſactions ofthe Bengal ſociety, that the barometer riſesand falls there regularly every twenty-fourhours. Here, in South America, its motion ismore aſtoniſhing. There are four atmoſphericaltides every twenty-four hours, which dependonly on the attraction of the ſun. The mer-cury falls from nine o’clock in the morning tillfour o’clock in the evening. It riſes from fourtill eleven o’clock; it falls from eleven o’clocktill half paſt four in the morning; it reaſcends, from that time till nine o’clock: neither winds,ſtorms, nor earthquakes, have any influence onthis motion.” This fact goes a great way to-wards proving the general truth of Mr. Ho-ward’s theory, given in the Philoſophical Ma-gazine, Vol. VII.
