Humboldt, at Caraccas, in S. America, hasmade ſome intereſting obſervations on the motionof the barometer near the equator. “I haveread,” ſays he, “in the Tranſactions of the Ben-gal Society, that the barometer riſes and falls thereregularly every 24 hour. Here, in S. America,its motion is more aſtoniſhing. There are fouratmoſpherical tides every 24 hours, which dependonly on the attraction of the ſun. The mercuryfalls from 9 o’clock in the morning till 4 o’clockin the evening. It riſes from 4 till 11 o’clock;it falls from 11 o’clock till half paſt 4 in the morn-ing; it reaſcends from that time till 9 o’clock:neither winds, ſtorms, nor earthquakes, have anyinfluence on this motion.” This fact goes a greatway towards proving the general truth of Mr. How-ard’s theory, given in the Philoſophical Maga-zine, Vol. VII.
