Humboldt, at Caraccas, in SouthAmerica, has made ſome intereſtingobſervations on the motion of the bar-ometer near the equator. “I haveread,” ſays he, “in the tranſactions ofthe Bengal Society, that the barome-ter riſes and falls there regularly every24 hours. Here, in
South America
, itsmotion is more aſtoniſhing. Thereare four atmoſpherical tides every 24hours, which depend only on the at-traction of the ſun. The mercuryfalls from nine o’clock in the morningtill four o’clock in the evening. Itriſes from four till eleven o’clock; itfalls from eleven o’clock till half paſtfour in the morning; it reaſcendsfrom that time till nine o’clock: Nei-ther winds, ſtorms, nor earthquakes,have any influence on this motion.”
