Humboldt and American Slavery.

—The follow-ing, from a letter, addressed lately by Alexander vonHumboldt to Julius Froebel, a German author of somedistinction, and formerly a member of the Parliamentat Frankfort, may not be without interest to some ofour readers, partly from the question of slavery it al-ludes to, and partly from the noble image it exhibits ofthe undying earnestness of purpose in that “old maneloquent”:—“I should like to live long enough yetto see your book ‘On the Political State of America,’with which you are engaged. May you continue tobrand that shameful leaning to slavery, and that im-posture about introducing negroes who are said to be-come free, and which is a means to encourage thosenegro hunts in the interior of Africa. What horrorsone is obliged to witness, if one has the misfortune ofliving from 1767 to 1858. My book against slaveryhas not been prohibited in Madrid, yet in the UnitedStates, which you call ‘the republic of gentlemen,’ itcould only become salcable by the omission of all thatconcerns the sufferings of coloured people, who, accord-ing to my political views, are fellow-men entitled toenjoy any amount of freedom. I lead an industriouslife, chiefly at night, being much worried by an everincreasing and mostly uninteresting correspondence.I exist joylessly, in my eighty-ninth year, since of somany things towards which I have striven ever sincemy early youth and with ever equal warmth so verylittle has been fulfilled.”
