This world-renowned man of science and ofthe age, in a letter to the traveler Froebel underdate of Berlin, Jan. 11, 1858, thus bears hisstrong testimony against American Slavery—He writes:Your next volume on the political future ofAmerica, would I, almost the original Adam,gladly live to see. Continue to brand the shame-ful devotion to Slavery, the treacherous impor-tation of negroes, under the pretense of theirbecoming free—a means to stimulate the hunt-ing of negroes in the interior of Africa. Whatatrocities have been witnessed by one who hashad the misfortune to live from 1789 to 1858.My book against Slavery (Political Essay onthe Island of Cuba) is not prohibited in Mad-rid, but cannot be purchased in the UnitedStates, which you call “The Republic of dis-tinguished people,” except with the omission ofeverything that relates to the sufferings of ourcolored fellow-men, who, according to my po-litical views, are entitled to the enjoyment ofthe same freedom with ourselves. Add to thisthe anathema on other races of men, forgettingthat the most ancient cultivation of humanity,before that of the white Hellenic race in Assy-ria, in Babylon, in the valley of the Nile, inIran, in China, was the work of colored men,though not woolly haired.I still work hard, mostly in the night, becauseI am unmercifully tormented with a constantlyincreasing correspondence, for the most part, ofnot the slightest interest. I live joyless in my89th year, because of the much for which I haveardently striven from my early youth, so littlehas been accomplished.
