Humboldt and American Slavery.

—The fol-lowing, is from a letter addressed lately by Alexander vonHumboldt to Julius Froebel, a German author of some dis-tinction, and formerly a member of the Parliament atFrankfort:—“I should like to live long enough yet to seeyour book ‘On the Political State of America,’ with whichyou are engaged. May you continue to brand that shame-ful leaning to slavery, and that imposture about introducingnegroes who are said to become free, and which is a means toencourage those negro hunts in the interior of Africa. Whathorrors one is obliged to witness, if one has the misfortuneof living from 1789 to 1858. My book against slavery has notbeen prohibited in Madrid, yet in the United States, whichyou call ‘the republic of gentlemen,’ it could only becomesaleable by the omission of all that concerns the sufferingsof coloured people who, according to my political views, arefellow-men entitled to enjoy any amount of freedom. Ilead an industrious life, chiefly at night, being much worriedby an ever-increasing and mostly uninteresting correspon-dence. I exist joylessly, in my eighty-ninth year, since of somany things towards which I have striven ever since myearly youth, and with ever equal warmth, so very little hasbeen fulfilled.”
