Compliment from Humboldt to Lieut. Maury.

The National Intelligencer has been favoredwith the subjoined translation of a letter recently ad-dressed by Baron Humboldt to Lieut. Maury of theNational Observatory:
It is with the most lively acknowledgment that Ioffer to my illustrious friend and associate, the Super-intendent of the United States Observatory and Hydro-graphical Office at Washington, the tribute of my re- |Spaltenumbruch| spectful admiration. The maritime conference atBrussels, and the happy influence which your visit toEurope has fortunately exercised, especially whereyour presence has been enjoyed, have contributed tospread your views concerning the means of shorteningthe duration of voyages through seas traversed by cur-rents. You are now enjoying the fruits of immenselabors. It belongs to me more than to any other traveler ofthe age, to congratulate my illustrious friend upon thecareer which he has so gloriously opened. Scarcely in a state of convalescence, I must limitmyself at present to offering you the tribute of ac-knowledgment due you for so many years.

Your very humble and very obedient servant, ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT,

At the age of 90 years. The usual excuses for the incorrectness of my hor-rible writing.
