AUTHOR’S PREFACE.

During the time that the present work was in course ofprinting, the author had the honour of being allowed to layparts of it before several of the most renowned menof science, whose favourable opinions of them he prefixesto his own introductory lines; as in them he finds the bestproof that his endeavours have not been quite destitute ofresult.

I. Extract from a letter of His Excellency BaronAlexander v. Humboldt, Member of the King’sPrivy Council, and Chamberlain to HisMajesty, at Berlin.

Acknowledging the noble purpose which you have pur-sued in your travels in distant lands to ascertain the con-dition of a scattered and oppressed people, I have read withmuch interest several portions of your book. You portrayconditions of degradation in the oppressed, and of arbitrarypower in the oppressors, which are but little known inEurope, and which will assuredly and with justice inducemany to peruse your work. May your new undertakings be likewise attended withsuccess!

Alexander von Humboldt.
