            <p>There has not been a single new book produced during<lb break="yes"/>the week which will be heard of or known in the year<lb break="yes"/>1900; we fear we might say 1875. The venerable Baron<lb break="yes"/>
                <hi rendition="#k">Humboldt</hi> has written the following letter to Dr. <hi rendition="#k">Cux-<lb break="no"/>len,</hi> the projector of the Darien ship canal:</p>

                    <hi rendition="#k">Sir:</hi> I am very much to blame for having so long de-<lb break="no"/>layed an answer to the agreeable and interesting despatch<lb break="yes"/>that you have been kind enough to forward me, by the<lb break="yes"/>hands of Mr. Augustus Peterman, so estimable by his<lb break="yes"/>character as well as by the solidity of his geographical<lb break="yes"/>labors. Dr. Cullen cannot doubt the high importance<lb break="yes"/>that I would attach to the merit of his courageous and<lb break="yes"/>useful investigations in the eastern part of the Isthmus<lb break="yes"/>of Panama; knowing my position and my antediluvian<lb break="yes"/>age, he will receive with indulgence, even so late, the ex-<lb break="no"/>pression of my lively gratitude. After having labored in<lb break="yes"/>vain, during half a century, to prove the possibility of an<lb break="yes"/>oceanic canal, and to point out the Gulf of San Miguel<lb break="yes"/>and Cupica as the points most worthy of attention; after<lb break="yes"/>having regretted, almost with bitterness, in the last edi-<lb break="no"/>tion of my &#x201C;Aspects of Nature,&#x201D; that the employment of<lb break="yes"/>the means which the present state of our knowledge af-<lb break="no"/>fords for obtaining precise measurements has been so<lb break="yes"/>long delayed, I ought, more than any one else, to be sat-<lb break="no"/>isfied to see at last my hopes for so noble an enterprise<lb break="yes"/>revived. By your publications, sir, and by that of Mr.<lb break="yes"/>Gisborne, will be originated the great work of changing<lb break="yes"/>an important part of the commerce of nations, and of<lb break="yes"/>rendering more accessible the rich countries of Eastern<lb break="yes"/>Asia and the Indian Archipelago. The undertaking is by<lb break="yes"/>no means above the intellectual and material power which<lb break="yes"/>civilized nations have attained to. The work should be<lb break="yes"/>one to last forever; it should not commence with a canal<lb break="yes"/>with locks, like the magnificent Caledonian canal; it must<lb break="yes"/>be a really oceanic canal, without a lock, a free passage<lb break="yes"/>from sea to sea, across which the course of the naviga-<lb break="no"/>tion will be modified, but not interrupted, by the differ-<lb break="no"/>ence in height and non-coincidence of the tides.</p>
