To Col. Fremont, Senator:—It is veryagreeable to me, sir, to address you these linesby my excellent friend, our Minister to theUnited States, N. de Gerold. After havinggiven you, in the new edition of my “Aspects|20|
of Nature,” the public testimony of the admi-ration which is due to your gigantic labors be-t een St. Louis, of Missouri, and the coastsof the South Sea, I feel happy to offer you, inthis little token of my existence (dans ce petitsigne de vie), the homage of my warm ac-knowledgment. You have displayed a noblecourage in distant expeditions, braved all thedangers of cold and famine, enriched all thebranches of the natural sciences, illustrateda vast country which was almost entirely un-known to us.A merit so rare has been acknowledged bya sovereign warmly interested in the progressof physical geography; the king orders me tooffer you the grand golden medal destined tothose who have labored at scientific progress.I hope that this mark of the Royal good willwill be agreeable to you at a time when, uponthe proposition of the illustrious geographer,Chas. Ritter, the Geographical Society at Ber-lin has named you an honorary member. Formyself, I must thank you particularly also forthe honor which you have done in attachingmy name and that of my fellow-laborer andintimate friend, Mr. Bonpland, to countriesneighboring to those which have been the ob-ject of our labors. California, which has sonobly resisted the introduction of Slavery, willbe worthily represented by a friend of libertyand of the progress of intelligence.Accept, I pray you, sir, the expression ofmy high and affectionate consideration.Your most humble and most obedient ser-vant,
