“To the Senator Colonel Fremont.—It affords megreat pleasure to forward you these lines through myexcellent friend M. de Gerolt. Having, in my new edi-tion of the ‘Views of Nature,’ publicly acknowledgedmy admiration for the gigantic works so meritoriouslycompleted by you between St. Louis and the South Sea,I feel happy in being able once more to give you theassurance of my warm recognition. In your distantexpeditions you displayed a noble fortitude, bravedevery danger of cold and hunger, enriched every branchof natural science, and opened for us a great region thatwas previously almost unknown to us.“Such rare merit has been recognised by a sovereignwho takes such a lively interest in the progress ofphysical geography. The King commissions me topresent you with the great gold medal that is intendedfor those who have signally contributed to the advanco-ment of science. I hope this sign of recognition will bedoubly welcome to you at a time that the GeographicalSociety of Berlin, upon the motion of the celebratedgeographer Charles Ritter, has further named you anhonourable member. In so far as concerns myself, Imust also especially thank you for the honour you con-fer upon me by having bestowed the names of myself, aswell as of my fellow-explorer and friend Bonland, onregions that border on those which formed the object ofour scientific labours. California, that has so magnani-mously withstood the introduction of slavery, will beworthily represented by a friend to freedom and to theprogress of science.
