To honor him as a pioneer of AmericanDiscovery, the King of Prussia
presented toColonel John C. Fremont “the GoldenMedal of
Progress in the sciences.” Themedal is of fine gold, massive, more
thandouble the size of the American double ea-gle, and of exquisite
workmanship. On theface is the medallion head of the King, Fred-erick
William the Fourth, surrounded byfigures emblematical of Religion, Jurispru-dence, Medicine and the Arts. On the re-verse, Apollo, in the chariot
of the sun,drawn by four high-mettled, plunging hor-ses, traversing
the zodiac, and darting raysof light from his head. This beautiful
trib-ute to the merit of Col. Fremont came tohim accompanied with a
complimentry let-ter from Baron Humboldt, of which the fol-lowing is a
translation:
“To Col. Fremont, Senator:
“It is very agreeable to me, sir, to ad-dress you these lines by my excellent
friend,our minister to the United States, M. deGerolt. After having
given you in the newedition of my ‘Aspects of
Nature,’ the pub-lic testimony of the admiration which is
dueto your gigantic labors between St. Louis,of Missouri, and the
coasts of the South Sea,I feel happy to offer you, in this living
to-ken (dans ce petit signe de vie) the
homageof my warm acknowledgment. You havedisplayed a noble courage in
distant expedi-tions, braved all the dangers of cold andfamine,
enriched all the branches of the nat-ural sciences, and illustrated a vast
countrywhich was almost entirely unknown to us.
A merit so rare has been acknowledged bya sovereign warmly interested in the
prog-ress of physical geography; the King ordersme to offer you the
grand golden medaldestined to those who have labored at sci-entific
progress. I hope that this mark ofthe Royal good will, will be agreeable
toyou at a time when, upon the proposition ofthe illustrious
geographer, Chas. Ritter, theGeographical Society at Berlin has
namedyou an honorary member. For myself, Imust thank you particularly
also for the hon-or which you have done in attaching myname and that of my fellow
laborer and in-timate friend, Mr. Bonpland, to countriesneighboring to
those which have been theobject of our labors. California, which hasso nobly resisted the introduction of
slavery,will be worthily represented by a friend ofliberty, and of
the progress of intelligence.
