A Sciantific Harvest.

—Von Humboldt in his re-port on Hemprich and Ehrenberg’s late travels, under-taken at the expense of the Prussian Government,through the Libyan Desert, Egypt, Sennaar, Dongo-la, Lebanon, Arabia, &c., bears this honourable tes-timony to their industry and talent:—“They collect-ed as if collecting alone had been the object of theirpursuits; with respect to preparations, preservation,and specific denomination of their subjects, they la-boured beyond what any other travellers have labouredunder similar circumstances. The specimens, trans-mitted to the Royal Museum, fill one hundred andfourteen cases, varying from twenty to thirty cubicfeet each. The total number of preserved specimensof plants exceeds 46,000, amongst which are 2900 spe-cies; of animals there are 34,000 individuals, amongstwhich there are 135 distinct species of mammalia, 430kinds of birds, 546 sorts of fish and amphibious ani-mals, 600 species of anelides and crustaceæ. and 2000kinds of insects. The Royal Cabinet of Minerals hasbeen enriched with 300 specimens of mountain forma-tions.
