—Von Humboldt, in hisreport on Hemprich and Ehrenberg’s late travels,undertaken at the expense of the Prussian Go-vernment, through the Libyan Desert, Egypt,Sennaar, Dongola, Lebanon, Arabia, &c., bearsthis honourable testimony to their industry andtalent:—“They collected as if collecting alonehad been the object of their pursuits; with re-spect to preparations, preservation, and specificdenomination of their subjects, they labouredbeyond what any other travellers have labouredunder similar circumstances. The specimenstransmitted to the Royal Museum fill 114 cases,varying from 20 to 30 cubic feet each. The to-tal number of preserved specimens of plants ex-ceeds 46,000, amongst which are 2900 species; ofanimals there are 34,000 individuals, amongstwhich there are 135 distinct species of mamma-lia, 430 kinds of birds, 546 sorts of fish and am-phibious animals, 600 species of anelides andcrustaceæ, and 2000 kinds of insects. The RoyalCabinet of Minerals has been enriched with 300specimens of mountain formations.
