AMERICAN STATISTICS.

The following details have been furnished byM. Humboldt respecting America, and are con-sidered accurate:—

Brazil 256,996 4,000,000
The island of Cuba contains 700,000 inhabi-tants, among whom are 250,000 slaves; Jamaica,402,000, among whom are 312,000 slaves; PortoRico, 225,000, of which 25,000 are slaves; Guada-loupe and its dependencies, 120,000, of which100,000 are slaves; Martinique, 99,000, amongwhich are 78,000 slaves. The whole population of the two Americasand the Carribee islands is 32,912,000 souls,among whom are included 5,047,000 black slaves,1,389,000 black freemen, 13,471,000 whites,8,600,000 Indians, of which about 820,000 are stillindependent, and 6,428,000 of a mixed race. This population is thus distributed, according tothe different forms of worship:—22,486,000 Ro-man Catholics; 11,636,000 Protestants; and820,000 Indians, not Christians. The following are the proportions in which thelanguages prevail in the New World. The Englishlanguage is spoken by 11,647,000; the Spanishby 10,504,000; The Indian by 7,593,000; the Por-tuguese by 3,740,000; the French by 1,242,000;the Durch, Danish, and Swedish, by 216,000 in-habitants; making, altogether, the number of27,349,000 speaking the European languages, and7,593,000 the Indian.
