The Intendancy of Puebla (in New Spain) presents to the curious traveller one of the most ancient monuments of vegetation. The famous Ahauete, or the Cypress of the village of Atlixco, is 23 metres and 3 tenths, viz. 73 feet in circumference. The hollow of its trunk is 15 feet diameter. This Cypress of Atlixco is, within a few feet, as large as the Baobab (Adansonia digitata) of Senegal; -- Humboldt's New Spain.
