This tree is a native of Venezuela, SouthAmerica. It grows in rocky situations, highup in the mountains. Baron Von Humboldtgives the following description of it: On thebarren flank of a rock grows a tree with dryand leathery leaves; its large woody roots canscarcely penetrate into the stony soil. Forseveral months in the year not a single showermoists its foliage. Its branches appear deadand dried; yet as soon as the trunk is pierced,there flows from it a sweet and nourishingmilk. It is at sunrise that this vegetablefountain is most abundant. The natives arethen to be seen hastening from all quarters,furnished with large bowls to receive the milk,which grows yellow, and thickens on the sur-face. Some drain their bowls under the tree,while others carry home the juice to their chil-dren; and you might fancy, as the father re-turned homeward with his milk, you saw thefamily of a shepherd gathering round and re-ceiving from him the production of his knife.The milk obtained by incision made in thetrunk is tolerably thick, free from all acridity,and of an agreeable and balmy smell. It wasoffered to us in the shell of the calabash tree.We drank a considerable quantity of it in theevening before going to bed, and very early inthe morning, without experiencing the slight-est injurious effect.
