“Among the many curiousphenomena which presented themselves to me inthe course of my travels,” says Humbolt, “I confessthere were few by which my imagination was sopowerfully affected as by the cow tree. On theparched side of a rock on the mountains of Venezuela
grows a tree with dry and leathery foliage, its largewoody roots scarcely penetrating into the ground.For several months in the year its leaves are notmoistened by a shower; its branches look as ifthey were dead and withered; but when the trunkis bored, a bland and nourishing milk flows fromit. It is at sunrise that the vegetable fountain flowsmost freely. At that time, blacks and natives areseen coming from all parts, provided with largebowls to receive the milk, which grows yellow andthickens at its surface. Some empty their vesselson the spot, while others carry them to their children.One imagines he sees the family of a shepherd whois distributing the milk of his flock.” It is namedthe palo de vaca, or cow tree.
