Amongst the great number of curious phenom-ena which presented themselves to me in thecourse of my travels, there are few which have sopowerfully affected my imagination as the aspectof the cow-tree. On the barren flank of a rockgrows a tree with coriaceous and dry leaves; itslarge woody roots can scarcely penetrate into thestone; for several months in the year not a singleshower moistens its foliage; its branches appeardead and dried, but when the trunk is piercedthere flows from it a sweet and nourishing milk.It is at the rising of the sun that this vegetablefountain is most abundant; the blacks and nativesare then seen hastening from all quarters, furnish-ed with large bowls to receive the milk, whichgrows yellow and thickens at its surface, someempty their bowls near the tree itself, others carrythe juice home to their children. We seem to be-hold the family of a shepherd who distributes themilk of his flock.—
