The following interesting ac-count of this wonder of the vegetable world isfrom the 4th volume of the Travels of M. deHumboldt:—
“Amid the great number of curious pheno-mena which have presented themselves to me inthe course of my travels, I confess there are fewthat have so powerfully affected my imaginationas the aspect of the cow-tree. Whatever relatesto milk, whatever regards corn, inspires an in-
|27|terest, which is not merely that of the physicalknowledge of things, but it is connected withanother order of ideas and sentiments. We canscarcely conceive how the human race could existwithout farinaceous substances, and without thatnourishing juice which the breast of the mothercontains, and which is appropriated to the longfeebleness of the infant. The amylaceous matterof corn, the object of religious veneration amongso many nations, ancient and modern, is diffusedin the seeds, and deposited in the roots of vege-tables; milk, which serves us as an aliment, ap-pears to us exclusively the produce of animalorganization. Such are the impressions we havereceived in our earliest infancy; such is also thesource of that astonishment which seizes us atthe aspect of the tree just described. It is nothere the solemn shades of forests, the majesticcourse of rivers, the mountains wrapped in eter-nal frost, that excite our emotion. A few dropsof vegetable juice recall to our minds all thepowerfulness and fecundity of nature. On thebarren flank of rock grows a tree with coriaceousand dry leaves. Its large woody roots canscarcely penetrate into the stone. For severalmonths of the year not a single shower moistens itsfoliage. Its branches appear dead and dried; butwhen the trunk is pierced, there flows from it asweet and nourishing milk. It is at the rising ofthe sun that this vegetable fountain is most abun-dant. The Blacks and natives are then seenhastening from all quarters, furnished with large
|28|bowls to receive the milk, which grows yellow,and thickens at its surface. Some employ theirbowls under the tree itself, others carry the juicehome to their children. We seem to see thefamily of a shepherd, who distributes the milk ofhis flock.
“I have described the sensations which thecow-tree awakens in the mind of the traveller atthe first view. In examining the physical pro-perties of animal and vegetable products, sciencedisplays them as closely linked together: but itstrips them of what is marvellous, and perhapsalso of a part of their charms, of what excitedour astonishment. Nothing appears isolated;the chymical principles that were believed to bepeculiar to animals are found in plants; a commonchain links together all organic nature.”
