On the barren flank of rock grows a tree with coria-ceous and dry leaves. Its large woody roots can scarcelypenetrate into the stone. For several months of theyear not a single shower moistens its foliage. Itsbranches appear dead and dried; but when the trunk ispierced, there flows from it a sweet and nourishing milk.It is at the rising of the sun that this vegetable fountainis most abundant. The Blacks and natives are thenseen hastening from all quarters, furnished with largebowls to receive the milk, which grows yellow andthickens at its surface. Some employ their bowls underthe tree itself, others carry the juice home to their chil-dren. We seem to see the family of a shepherd, whodistributes the milk of his flock.
“I have described the sensations which the cow-treeawakens in the mind of the traveller at the first view.In examining the physical properties of animal and vege-table products, science displays them as closely linkedtogether; but it strips them of what is marvellous, andperhaps also of a part of their charms, of what excitedour astonishment. Nothing appears isolated; the che-mical principles that were believed to be peculiar to ani-mals are found in plants; a common chain links togetherall organic nature.”
