Antediluvian America.

— At a height supe-rior to Mont Blanc, we find petrified sea-shells on thesummit of the Andes. The fossil bones of elephantsare spread over the equinoctial regions of a continent, where the living elephant does not exist; and it is re-markable that these bones are not discovered at thefoot of the palm trees in the burning plainsof Orinoco, but in the coldest and most elevatedregions of the Cordilleras. In the New World, as wellas the Old, generations of species long extinct havepreceded those which now people the earth. There isno proof that the existence of man is much more re-cent than in the other continent.

Humboldt.
