The Volcano of Cotopaxi.—

The form ofCotopaxi is the most beautiful and regular of thecolossal summits of the Andes. It is a perfect cone,which, covered with an enormous layer of snow,shines with dazzling splendour at the setting of thesun, and detaches itself in the most picturesque mannerfrom the azure vault of the sky. In scaling the volcanoof Cotopaxi, it is extremely difficult to attain theinferior boundary of perpetual snow. On the south-east of the mountain is a mass of rock, half-concealedunder the snow, studded with points, and which thenatives call “the head of the Inca.”—Humboldt’sResearches.
