                <p>At a height superior to that of<lb break="yes"/>Mont Blanc, on the summit of the Andes, we find pe-<lb break="no"/>trified sea-shells; fossil bones of the elephant are<lb break="yes"/>spread over the equinoctial regions; and what is very<lb break="yes"/>remarkable, they are not discovered at the feet of the<lb break="yes"/>palm trees in the burning plains of the Orinoco, but on<lb break="yes"/>the coldest and most elevated regions of the Cordilleras.<lb break="yes"/>In the new world, as well as in the old, generations of<lb break="yes"/>species long extinct have preceded those which now<lb break="yes"/>people the earth, the waters, and the air.&#x2014;<hi rendition="#i">Humboldt.</hi>
