At a height superior to that ofMont Blanc, on the summit of the Andes, we find pe-trified sea-shells; fossil bones of the elephant arespread over the equinoctial regions; and what is veryremarkable, they are not discovered at the feet of thepalm trees in the burning plains of the Orinoco, but onthe coldest and most elevated regions of the Cordilleras.In the new world, as well as in the old, generations ofspecies long extinct have preceded those which nowpeople the earth, the waters, and the air.—Humboldt.
