Extinct Species. -

At a height superior to that ofMont Blanc, on the summit of the Andes, we findpetrified sea-shells; fossil bones of the elephant arespread over the equinoctial regions; and what is veryremarkable, they are not discovered at the feet of thepalm trees in the burning plains of the Orinoco, buton the coldest and most elevated regions of the Cor-dilleras. In the new world, as well as in the old, generations of species long extinct have precededthose which now people the earth, the waters, andthe air.—Humboldt’s American Researches.
