cotopaxi.

This mountain is one of the loftliestof those volcanoes of the Andes,which at recent epochs have under-gone eruptions. Notwithstanding itlies near the equator, its summits arecovered with perpetual snows. Theabsolute height of Cotopaxi is 18,776feet, or three miles and a half, con-sequently it is 2,622 feet, or a half amile higher than Vesuvius would be,were that mountain placed on thepeak of Teneriffe. Cotopaxi is themost mischevious of the volcanoes inthe kingdom of Quito; and its explo-sions the most frequent and disaster-ous. The masses of scoria, and thepieces of rock thrown out of this vol-cano, cover a surface of several squareleagues, and would form, were theyheaped together, a prodigious moun-tain. In 1738, the flames of Coto-paxi rose to 3000 feet, or upwards ofa half mile, above the brink of thecrater. In 1744, the roaring of thisvolcano was heard at the distance of600 miles. On the 4th April 1760,the quantity of ashes ejected at themouth of Cotopaxi, was so great, thatit was dark till three in the afternoon. The explosion which took place in1803, was preceded by the sudden mel-ting of the snows which covered themountain. For 20 years before, nosmoke or vapour, that could be percei-ved, had issued from the crater; but ina single night, the subterraneous firesbecame so active, that at sunrise theexternal walls of the cone, heated to avery considerable degrée of tempera-ture, appeared naked and of the darkcolour which is peculiar to vitrifiedscoria. At the port of Guayaquil, (ob-serves Humboldt) fifty two leagues dis-tant from the crater, we heard, day &night, the noise of the volcano like thedischarge of a battery; and we distin-guished those tremendous sounds evenon the Pacific Ocean.
