Baron Humboldt, in his “Essai po-litique sur le Royaume de la NouvelleEspagne,” has described nine pointsof communication between the At-lantic and Pacific Oceans. It has notyet been generally known that a com-munication by water has actually ex-isted. Of these the 7th is peculiar-ly interesting:

“In the interior of the province ofChoto, the small Ravin de la Raspa-dura unites the neighboring sourcesof the Rio de Noanama, called alsoRio San Juan, and the little riverQuito. This river, united with theRio Andageda and the Rio Zatara,forms the Rio d’Atrato, which flowsinto the sea of the Antilles, (Carrib-bean Sea,) and the Rio San Juan fallsinto the South Sea. An enterpriz-ing monk, (the curate of the villageof Novita,) with the aid of his flock(ses parossiens,) dug a small canal inthe Ravin de la Raspadura. By thiscanal, which is navigable during theperiod of abundant rains, boats, ladenwith Cacao, have passed from onesea to the other. Here then is acommunication, which has existedsince 1788, and of which the Europe-ans know nothing. This canal ofRaspadura unites, on the coasts ofthe two oceans, two points which areseventy-five leagues apart.”

This canal, effected by the enter-prizing monk, is nearly in the lati-tude of Cape Corientes, or about sixdegrees forty-five minutes N. and a-bout three degrees E. of the Capitol.
