                <p>Baron <persName key="humboldt_av">Humboldt</persName>, in his &#x201C;<hi rendition="#i">Essai po-<lb break="no"/>litique sur le Royaume de la Nouvelle<lb break="yes"/>Espagne,</hi>&#x201D; has described <hi rendition="#i">nine</hi> points<lb break="yes"/>of communication between the At-<lb break="no"/>lantic and Pacific Oceans. It has not<lb break="yes"/>yet been generally known that a com-<lb break="no"/>munication by water has actually ex-<lb break="no"/>isted. Of these the 7th is peculiar-<lb break="no"/>ly interesting:</p>
                <lb break="yes"/>
                <p>&#x201C;In the interior of the province of<lb break="yes"/>Choto, the small Ravin de la Raspa-<lb break="no"/>dura unites the neighboring sources<lb break="yes" />of the Rio de Noanama, called also<lb break="yes"/>Rio San Juan, and the little river<lb break="yes"/>Quito. This river, united with the<lb break="yes" />Rio Andageda and the Rio Zatara,<lb break="yes"/>forms the <placeName key="atrato">Rio d&#x2019;Atrato</placeName>, which flows<lb break="yes" />into the <placeName key="antillischesmeer">sea of the Antilles</placeName>, (Carrib-<lb break="no"/>bean Sea,) and the Rio San Juan falls<lb break="yes" />into the South Sea. An enterpriz-<lb break="no"/>ing monk, (the curate of the village<lb break="yes"/>of Novita,) with the aid of his flock<lb break="yes" />(<hi rendition="#i">ses parossiens,</hi>) dug a small canal in<lb break="yes"/>the Ravin de la Raspadura. By this<lb break="yes"/>canal, which is navigable during the<lb break="yes"/>period of abundant rains, boats, laden<lb break="yes"/>with Cacao, have passed from one<lb break="yes"/>sea to the other. Here then is a<lb break="yes"/>communication, which has existed<lb break="yes"/>since 1788, and of which the Europe-<lb break="no"/>ans know nothing. This canal of<lb break="yes"/>Raspadura unites, on the coasts of<lb break="yes"/>the two oceans, two points which are<lb break="yes" />seventy-five leagues apart.&#x201D;</p>
