From the Travels of Humboldt. IDEA OF MEXICAN WEALTH.

This traveller affirms that the riches ofMexico are infinitely superior to those of|Spaltenumbruch|Peru. I know of no Peruvian family (sayshe) in the possession of a fixed and cer-tain revenue of 130,000 francs, ($26,000;) but in Mexico there are individu-als who possess no mines, and whose re-venue amounts to a million of francs, 200,000 dollars. The family of the count dela Valenciano possesses alone, on theridge of the Andes, a property worth 25millions of francs, (5,000,000 dolls.) with-out including the mines of Valenciano,which yields, one year with another, anett revenue of 1,500,000 livres, (240,000 dolls.). The Count de Regia built, at his ownexpense, two vessels of the largest size,worth 600,000 dolls. and presented themto the king of Spain. The family of Fagoaga, well known forits beneficence, intelligence, and zeal forthe public good, exhibits the example ofthe greatest wealth which was ever deri-ved from a mine. A single vein whichthe marquis of Fagoaga possesses, in thedistrict of Sombredath, left in five or sixmonths, all charges deducted, a nett pro-fit of four millions of dollars. The European reader will be still moreastonished, when I inform him of the ex-traordinary fact that this family lent,about the year 1800, a sum of more thanthree millions and a half of francs, (700,000 dollars) without interest, to a friendwhose fortune they believed would bemade by it in a solid manner. To complete the view of the immensewealth centered in the hands of a few in-dividuals in Mexico, it is only necessaryto add, that amongst instances of individ-ual opulence, nine clergymen only, pos-sess an annual income, collectively, of539,000 dollars—a sum almost equal tothe whole expenses of the civil govern-ment of the United States.
