From the Travels of Humboldt.

This traveller affirms that the rich-es of Mexico are infinitely superior tothose of Peru. I know of no Peru-vian family (says he) in the possessionof a fixed and certain revenue of 130,000 francs, ($26,000); but in Mexicothere are no individuals who possessno mines, and whose revenue amountsto a million of francs, ($200,000.)The family of the Count de la Valen-ciano, possesses alone, on the ridge ofthe Andes a property worth 25 millionsof francs, ($5,000,000), without inclu-ding the mine of Valeciano, whichyields, one year with another, a nettrevenue of 1,500,000 livres, ($240,000). The Count de Regia built, at hisown expense, two vessels of the lar-gest size, worth $600,000, and presen-ted them to the King of Spain. The family of Fagoaga, well knownfor its beneficence, intelligence, andzeal for the public good, exhibits theexample of the greatest wealth, whichwas ever derived from a mine. A sin-gle vein which the marquis of Fagoagapossesses, in the districh of Sombre-dath, left in five or six months, allcharges deducted, a nett profit of 4 mil-lion of dollars. The European reader will be stillmore astonished when I inform himof the extraordinary fact that this fam-ily lent, about the year 1800, a sum ofmore than three millions and a half offrancs, ($700,000,) without interest,to a friend whose fortune they believedwould be made by it in a solid manner. To complete the view of the im-mense wealth centered in the hands ofa few individuals in Mexico, it is onlynecessary to add, that, amongst instan-ces of individual opulence, nine clergy-men only possess an annual income,collectively, of 539,000 dollars—a sumalmost equal to the whole expenses ofthe civil government of the UnitedStates.
