Interesting Geographical Notice.

Baron Humboldt, in his “ Eſſa Eſſai poli-tique ſur le Royaume de la Nouvelle Eſ-pagne,” has deſcribed nine points of com-munication between the Atlantic and Pa-cific Oceans. It has not been yet gener-ally known that a communication by wa-ter has actually exiſted. Of theſe the 7this peculiarly intereſting:

“In the interior of the province ofChoto, the ſmall Ravin de la Raſpaduraunites the neighboring ſources of theRio de Noanama, called, alſo, Rio SanJuan, and the little river Quito. Thisriver, united with the Rio Andageda andthe Rio Zitara, forms the Rio d’ Ataro,which flows into the Sea of the Antilles,(Caribbean Sea) and the Rio San Juanfalls into the South Sea. An enterpriz-ing monk, (the curate of the village ofNovita,) with the aid of his flock, (ſeſparoieſſiens,) dug a ſmall canal in theRavin de la Raſpadura. By this canalwhich is navigable during the periodsof abundant rains, boats, laden with Ca-cao, have paſſed from one ſea to the other. Here then is a communication, which hasexiſted ſince 1788, and of which the Euro-peans know nothing. This canal ofRaſpadura unites, on the coaſts of the twooceans, two points which are ſeventy fiveleagues apart” Eſſa Eſſai Politique, liv. 1 ch. 2.

This canal, effected by the enterpriz-ing monk, is nearly in the latitude of Cape Corientes, or about ſix degrees forty-five minutes north and about three de-grees eaſt of the Capitol—Z.—Nat Int.
