                <p>Baron <persName key="humboldt_av">Humboldt</persName>, in his &#x201C;<hi rendition="#i">
                        <choice>
                            <sic>E&#x017F;&#x017F;a</sic>
                            <corr type="editorial">E&#x017F;&#x017F;ai</corr>
                        </choice> poli-<lb break="no"/>tique &#x017F;ur le Royaume de la Nouvelle E&#x017F;-<lb break="no"/>pagne,</hi>&#x201D; has de&#x017F;cribed <hi rendition="#i">nine</hi> points of com-<lb break="no"/>munication between the <placeName key="atlantik">Atlantic</placeName> and Pa-<lb break="no"/>cific Oceans. It has not been yet gener-<lb break="no"/>ally known that a communication by wa-<lb break="no"/>ter has actually exi&#x017F;ted. Of the&#x017F;e the 7th<lb break="yes"/>is peculiarly intere&#x017F;ting:</p>

                <p>&#x201C;In the interior of the province of<lb break="yes"/>Choto, the &#x017F;mall Ravin de la Ra&#x017F;padura<lb break="yes"/>unites the neighboring &#x017F;ources of the<lb break="yes"/>Rio de Noanama, called, al&#x017F;o, Rio San<lb break="yes"/>Juan, and the little river Quito. This<lb break="yes" />river, united with the Rio Andageda and<lb break="yes"/>the Rio Zitara, forms the Rio d&#x2019; Ataro,<lb break="yes"/>which flows into the <placeName key="antillischesmeer">Sea of the Antilles</placeName>,<lb break="yes" />(Caribbean Sea) and the Rio San Juan<lb break="yes"/>falls into the South Sea. An enterpriz-<lb break="no"/>ing monk, (the curate of the village of<lb break="yes"/>Novita,) with the aid of his flock, (<hi rendition="#i" >&#x017F;e&#x017F;<lb break="yes"/>paroie&#x017F;&#x017F;iens,</hi>) dug a &#x017F;mall canal in the<lb break="yes"/>Ravin de la Ra&#x017F;padura. By this canal<lb break="yes"/>which is navigable during the periods<lb break="yes" />of abundant rains, boats, laden with Ca-<lb break="no"/>cao, have <hi rendition="#i">pa&#x017F;&#x017F;ed from one &#x017F;ea to the other.</hi>
                    <lb break="yes"/>Here then is a communication, which has<lb break="yes" />exi&#x017F;ted &#x017F;ince 1788, and of which the Euro-<lb break="no"/>peans know nothing. This canal of<lb break="yes"/>Ra&#x017F;padura unites, on the coa&#x017F;ts of the two<lb break="yes"/>oceans, two points which are <hi rendition="#i">&#x017F;eventy five<lb break="yes"/>leagues</hi> apart&#x201D; <hi rendition="#i">

                <p>This canal, effected by the enterpriz-<lb break="no"/>ing monk, is nearly in the latitude of<lb break="yes"/>
                    <hi rendition="#i">Cape Corientes,</hi> or about &#x017F;ix degrees forty-<lb break="hyph-yes"/>five minutes <hi rendition="#i">north</hi> and about three de-<lb break="no"/>grees <hi rendition="#i">ea&#x017F;t</hi> of the <hi rendition="#i">Capitol</hi>&#x2014;Z.&#x2014;<hi rendition="#i">Nat Int.</hi>
