                </head>
                <p>&#x2014;The enigmatical phenomena of the<lb break="yes"/>so-called &#x201C;black
                    waters&#x201D; of certain tributaries of the<lb break="yes"/>Orinoco are, in
                    reality, of a coffee-brown colour, which,<lb break="yes"/>in the shade of palm
                    groves, seems almost to pass into ink-<lb break="hyph-yes"/>black. When placed in
                    transparent vessels, the water<lb break="yes"/>appears of a golden yellow. The
                    image of the Southern<lb break="yes"/>Constellation is reflected with wonderful
                    clearness in these<lb break="yes"/>black streams, and when they flow gently,
                    they afford to<lb break="yes"/>the observer engaged in taking astronomical
                        observations<lb break="yes"/>a most excellent artificial horizon.&#x2014;<hi
