Sound of Waters in the Night

— During the fivedays which we passed in the neighbourhood of theOrinoco cataracts, it was striking to hear the thunder ofthe rushing torrents sound three times louder by nightthan by day. In all European waterfalls the same phe-nomenon is remarked. What can be its cause in a wil-derness where there is nothing to interrupt the repose ofnature? Perhaps the currents of heated ascending airby causing irregular density in the elastic medium, im-pede the propagation of sound during the day, by thedisturbance they may occasion in the waves of the sound;whereas, during the nocturnal cooling of the earth’ssurface, the upward currents cease.— Humboldt’s Aspectsof Nature.
