This I find confirmed in the <placeName key="amerika">new world</placeName> in the<lb break="yes"/>interior of <placeName key="neuandalusien">New Andalu&#x017F;ia</placeName>, and therefore the ob&#x017F;ervations<lb break="yes"/>made by <persName key="nouet_na" >Nouet</persName> in <placeName key="aegypten">Egypt</placeName> &#x017F;eem to be e&#x017F;tabli&#x017F;hed. <p>I have here given you my ob&#x017F;ervations of the inclination<lb break="yes" />only, which are true to 15&#x2032;. During calms I obtained them<lb break="yes"/>at &#x017F;ea with more accuracy, and the periods of the vibrations<lb break="yes"/>of the needle could be determined very exactly. If the &#x017F;ame<lb break="yes"/>number is counted in the &#x017F;ame time during five or &#x017F;ix repeated<lb break="yes"/>trials, and if this is &#x017F;till the ca&#x017F;e when the in&#x017F;trument is<lb break="yes"/>moved from its place, the re&#x017F;ults, in my opinion, may be<lb break="yes" />confidered as correct. Though calms are not uncommon<lb break="yes"/>between the tropics, during the cour&#x017F;e of forty days I was<lb break="yes"/>able to make only ten very accurate ob&#x017F;ervations.</p>

<p>During the earthquake at <placeName key="cumana">Cumana</placeName>, on the 4th of No-<lb break="no"/>vember 1799, the inclination of the magnetic needle was<lb break="yes"/>altered, but not the declination. This ob&#x017F;ervation I cannot too<lb break="yes"/>&#x017F;trongly recommend to the attention of the Board of Longi-<lb break="no"/>tude. The&#x017F;e ob&#x017F;ervations may be made with more ea&#x017F;e, as<lb break="yes"/>the water of the &#x017F;ea, in an extent of 12000 &#x017F;quare miles, has<lb break="yes"/>always the &#x017F;ame temperature day and night; &#x017F;o that the mo&#x017F;t<lb break="yes"/>&#x017F;en&#x017F;ible thermometer, during from four to &#x017F;ix days &#x017F;ail, does<lb break="yes"/>not ri&#x017F;e or fall above 0&#x00B7;3°. In the neighbourhood of &#x017F;hal-<lb break="no"/>lows it was from 2 to 3 degrees, and more, colder. This<lb break="yes"/>ob&#x017F;ervation of <persName key="franklin_b" >Franklin</persName>, hitherto forgotten, may at &#x017F;ome<lb break="yes" />period be of great u&#x017F;e to navigation; not that &#x017F;eamen &#x017F;hould<lb break="yes"/>throw a&#x017F;ide the lead entirely, and tru&#x017F;t to the thermometer,<lb break="yes"/>for this would be folly; but becau&#x017F;e the ob&#x017F;ervations may be<lb break="yes"/>&#x017F;o ea&#x017F;ily repeated, and becau&#x017F;e the thermometer will an-<lb break="no"/>nounce the danger much &#x017F;ooner than the lead, as the colder<lb break="yes"/>water above the &#x017F;hallows le&#x017F;&#x017F;ens the temperature in the water<lb break="yes"/>in the neighbourhood.
