Humboldt, at Carraccas, in South Amer-ica, has made ſome intereſting obſervationson the motion of the barometer near the equator. “I have read,” ſays he, “in theTranſactions of the Bengal Society, that thebarometer riſes and falls there regularly eve-ry 24 hours hours. Here, in South America, itsmotion is more aſtoniſhing. There are fouratmoſpherical tides every 24 hours, whichdepend only on the attraction of the ſun.The mercury falls from 9 o’clock in themorning till 4 o’clock in the evening. Itriſes from 4 till 11 o’clock; it falls from 11o’clock till half paſt 4 in the morning; itreaſcends from that time till 9 o’clock:neither winds, ſtorms, nor earthquakes, haveany influence on this motion.” This factgoes a great way towards proving the gen-neral truth of Mr. Howard’s theory, given inthe philoſophical Magazine, Vol. VII.
