                <persName key="humboldt_av"/>Humboldt, at <placeName key="caracas" >Carraccas</placeName>, in South Amer-<lb break="no"/>ica, has made &#x017F;ome intere&#x017F;ting ob&#x017F;ervations<lb break="yes"/>on the motion of the barometer near the<lb break="yes"/>
                <placeName key="aequator">equator</placeName>. &#x201C;I have read,&#x201D; &#x017F;ays he, &#x201C;in the<lb break="yes"/>Tran&#x017F;actions of the <placeName key="bengalen"/>Bengal Society, that the<lb break="yes"/>barometer ri&#x017F;es and falls there regularly eve-<lb break="no"/>ry 24 <choice>
                    <sic>hours</sic>
                    <corr type="editorial">hours.</corr>
                </choice> Here, in <placeName key="suedamerika">South America</placeName>, its<lb break="yes"/>motion is more a&#x017F;toni&#x017F;hing. There are four<lb break="yes"/>atmo&#x017F;pherical tides every 24 hours, which<lb break="yes" />depend only on the attraction of the &#x017F;un.<lb break="yes"/>The mercury falls from 9 o&#x2019;clock in the<lb break="yes"/>morning till 4 o&#x2019;clock in the evening. It<lb break="yes"/>ri&#x017F;es from 4 till 11 o&#x2019;clock; it falls from 11<lb break="yes"/>o&#x2019;clock till half pa&#x017F;t 4 in the morning; it<lb break="yes"/>rea&#x017F;cends from that time till 9 o&#x2019;clock:<lb break="yes"/>neither winds, &#x017F;torms, nor earthquakes, have<lb break="yes" />any influence on this motion.&#x201D; This fact<lb break="yes"/>goes a great way towards proving the gen-<lb break="no"/>neral truth of Mr. Howard&#x2019;s theory, given in<lb break="yes"/>the philo&#x017F;ophical Magazine, Vol. VII.</p>
